Internet Service Providers are Blocking Traffic

I’m a fan of live music and a patron of online communities such as eTree.org, where music junkies swap copyright-free music. So I was stung when I recently tried to download a live recording of a Dave Matthews concert only to discover that my BitTorrent client was dead in the water.

My system and Net connection checked out fine, so paranoia immediately set in: Was my Internet service provider, RCN, blocking BitTorrent? I called RCN and the tech I spoke to confirmed my suspicions, telling me that the ISP had added BitTorrent to its list of prohibited programs because many people use the software to download copyrighted material. The fact that the concert I was trying to download was copyright-free didn’t sway him.

Later I called RCN’s press department as a reporter, and the story changed. The ISP’s spokesperson told me that the customer support rep I had talked to earlier misspoke. RCN has never intentionally blocked peer-to-peer traffic, the spokesperson said, and it supports the principles behind Net neutrality. Within 24 hours, my bandwidth-related problems with BitTorrent vanished.

Of course, most people can’t call their ISP and (honestly) identify themselves as professional journalists. But that doesn’t mean you have no recourse if your ISP starts blocking your file-sharing activities. A number of tips and tools can help you determine whether you’re facing a BitTorrent blockade and, if so, help you get around it.

Vuze, a company that makes peer-to-peer software and uses the platform to distribute content, published a study in April in which it concluded that all U.S. broadband providers–including AT&T, Cablevision Systems, Charter Communications, Comcast, Cox Communications, Qwest, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon–disrupt peer-to-peer traffic. Vuze asserted that these ISPs regularly send “false reset” messages to the Vuze software with the aim of slowing file transfers.

AT&T has flatly denied this claim. Subsequently, Vuze has softened its charge against ISPs, stating that “Our data collection was credible and transparent, but not conclusive,” in the words of Jay Monahan, Vuze general counsel.

Other ISPs have acknowledged imposing some limitations on peer-to-peer traffic. Comcast first denied but now admits to interrupting access to file-sharing programs such as BitTorrent. Comcast executive vVice president David L. Cohen explained at a Federal Communications Commission hearing last February that disrupting BitTorrent traffic was a reasonable method of traffic management during busy usage periods.

Time Warner Cable spokesperson Alex Dudley says that his company takes reasonable steps to manage its network, including limiting bandwidth to applications such as peer-to-peer software

How to Integrate Windows Live Hotmail Account with the Blackberry Internet Service

Blackberry Internet Service email flow (Example #1)

a)Bill receives a new email message on his windows live hotmail (bill@hotmail.com) account over the internet.

b)The integrated (Windows Live Hotmail) email account would notify the Blackberry Internet Service of the new email.

c)The Blackberry Internet Service will than retrieve the new email from integrated account and delivers it you’re smartphone.

Blackberry Internet Service email flow (Example #2)

a)       Bill sends an email from his Blackberry device over the internet using the bill@hotmail.com account.    

b)      The Blackberry device will send the email to the Blackberry Internet Service over the wireless network.

c)       The Blackberry Internet Service sends the email to your friend email account.

Now that you have a basic overview of the Blackberry Internet Service and the BIS email flow. We can proceed integrating your existing Windows Live Hotmail Account with Blackberry Internet Service. In order to integrate you’re personal email address with your Blackberry Pearl 8230 smartphone you need to:

1)Active you’re Blackberry Pearl 8230 smartphone on Verizon’s wireless network.

2)Create a BIS account by registering the wireless handheld device on (RIM’s) Research In Motion website.

3)Create a (BIS) Blackberry Internet Service account using your Blackberry smartphone.

4)Configure/Add your existing Windows Live Hotmail account with Blackberry Internet Service.

Step 1: To active you’re smartphone on Verizon’s Network.  Please follow the instruction below or go to Verizon’s website at: http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=14080  or complete the OTA (over-the-air) activation from your handheld. 

1)To activate the device on the Verizon’s wireless network using your blackberry. Dial *228 (star key and 228) from your smartphone to initialize the call.

2)Press 1 to begin the programming on your smartphone. The system will take approximately two minutes to program (link) your service with your device.

3)Once the programming is complete you will receive a confirmation message and the call will automatically.

Step 2: Register the BlackBerry smartphone device over RIM’s (research in motions) wireless network (guide below is created using BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 to 4.7).

1)From your PDA go to the Home screen, go to Options | or click Settings.

4)Host Routing Table.

5)Then click to view the menu and select Register Now.

Step 3: Create a (BIS) Blackberry Internet Service account for Blackberry Create BlackBerry Internet Service account from your BlackBerry smartphone.

a)Verify your handheld is connected to a wireless network (you should be able to browse the internet from  your smartphone)

b)From your smartphone click on Emil Settings.

c)To agree to the licenses and terms. Click on I Agree option.

Step 4: Configure/Add your existing Windows Live Hotmail account with BlackBerry Internet Service.

a)Access your BlackBerry Internet Service account (By default you do not need to provide login information.

b)Under Services click on Email Services

c)Select Add Email Account

d)Enter your windows live hotmail account information:

Username:                    example@hotmail.com

Password:                    XXXXXXXXXX

using Sify since more than 1 year.I opted for this because its economical & other networks wont have their our service in our area,so i have no other choice to go for this.Then the real problem starts,every time it displays ‘cable unplugged’ or some gateway not reachable,intially i thought its my internal problem & restarting my system everytime, later i came to know that it problem from Sify network & everybody in our area same thing.then i called customer care(CC) so many times & intimating about the problem but believe me nobody responded,everytime ‘we will be intimating to our service team & we will resolve ASAP’ that the response i will get everytime from CC.Ok if I consult local dealer. useless fellows no body take my call luckily

I dont know what sify is doing sleeping,y wont the take care in appointing a quality dealer,they will be prompt in collecting money everymonth,if we wont pay in time they will not spare & cancel the connection or wont renew then we have to call them again to renew it,its bad on Sify path,Iam very upset with thier service,

I gave a complaint to Head CC operations at chennai ,I have to wait & see regarding response,I request not o prefer Sify,a useless and worst Broadband with no proper Customer Service,
